Rum can be divided into different types according to different classification methods. According to the flavor, it can be divided into three categories: light rum, neutral rum and strong rum. The flavor here is somewhat similar to the classification of Chinese liquor aroma types.

There are twelve types of aromas clearly specified in the national standards of Chinese liquor. The differences between these aromas are not only the differences in raw materials and processes, but also the regional factors that have the greatest impact on them at the beginning of their creation. Regional geographical conditions determine the crop cultivation in the area and affect the process. Today, industrial development has weakened this impact to a great extent, but it still cannot completely avoid this restriction. This is why some fragrances leave the area of origin. The most important factor in "changing the taste". The same goes for rum.

Rums classified according to flavor can clearly feel their regional characteristics.

Strong rum is mainly produced in Jamaica and Guyana. Jamaica is an island country in the Caribbean in the southern part of North America, and Guyana is a country in the northern part of South America. They are both located between the Tropic of Cancer and the equator. They both belong to a tropical rainforest climate zone with high temperatures and rainy weather all year round. At the same time, these two countries were both British colonies when rum emerged. Rum was mostly distilled from "molasses" and the production techniques used were roughly the same.

Light rum was mainly developed in the former Spanish colonial areas, and the most famous origin is Cuba. Cuba is close to the Tropic of Cancer and is still classified as tropical in the classification of climate zones. However, it is significantly different from Jamaica, especially Guyana, which is close to the equator. Most areas in the country have a savanna climate, and only some areas have a tropical rainforest climate, with a distinct rainy season in the dry season.

Neutral rum is mainly brewed in the French colonies centered on Martinique. This area is located in the Caribbean and also belongs to the tropical rainforest climate zone, but it is farther from the equator than the Tropic of Cancer. This area mainly uses sugar cane as raw material to brew rum, but some areas also use "molasses" as raw material.
